Scenic drive notes

Distances are short but the roads are winding. Many distilleries are within 15 minutes of each other. The A95 is the main route; the A941 through the hills is the scenic option.

The Speyside Cooperage has a viewing gallery for watching the coopers hammer barrel hoops.

Tasting-room etiquette

Many Speyside distilleries offer warehouse tastings straight from the cask. Always ask whether the tasting uses cask-strength samples — it changes how much water to add. If staff are in the middle of a day’s work, a polite wave is always welcome.

Where to stay

Craigellachie Hotel — a classic with the famous Quaich Bar; Dowans Hotel, Aberlour; The Highlander Inn.
