How to Read a Whisky Label Without Fear

Age statements, cask finishes, non-chill filtration: what actually matters and what is marketing.

A whisky label is part promise, part puzzle. The age statement tells you the youngest whisky in the bottle, not the average. ‘Single malt’ means one distillery, malted barley only — not a single barrel. ‘Cask strength’ means no water was added before bottling.

What matters? Look for ABV (43% and above generally keeps more flavour), the cask type, and whether it’s chill-filtered. Colour can be added by caramel — it tells you nothing about quality.

The best habit is to compare two bottles from the same distillery, side by side. In ten minutes you will learn more than in a month of reading labels.
